VanBrights: Adventure Calls

"Let us be nomads
We've married our fortunes together
I have an atlas right here in my bag
So we bought a case of seltzer
and some snacks from Trader Joe's
And drove off to look for America"

Welcome back to our travelogue! You last saw us here in Fall 2022 when we were about to cross the Colorado River into California to complete a 3-month-long cross-country trek in our new conversion van, "Morgan." Named after the hard-working 19th-century American horse breed first sired in Vermont (hey, if boats can have names, so can RVs!), Morgan has every convenience we need for life on the road.

Our plan back in October 2022 was simple: visit with family in California (Kathy’s sister Laura and her husband Bob, together with their extended clan), explore some southern CA sites, and then reverse course and head back--leisurely--to the East Coast by Christmas. We were having a blast in the Golden State—parties and family gatherings; day trips to local sights; camping at Joshua Tree National Park and on the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach—when we were ripped from the laid-back beachy world of Orange County and thrown into the sterile environment of a local hospital. Mark underwent abdominal surgery on November 30, and we stayed in CA through the holidays for his recuperation. Dodging winter storms, we drove back to CT in January 2023 for Mark’s final semester of teaching. We spent a few blustery months in rented houses on Long Island Sound, our trustworthy Morgan parked just outside.

After Mark retired in May 2023 we beelined back to California in our van for his follow-up medical treatments. By late summer we would be exploring the Rockies and points beyond, we thought, with a return to CT by the holidays. Instead, we had the shock of our lives when Mark’s second hospitalization lasted six grueling weeks. Owing to the healing power of prayers from folks across the fruited plain, together with topnotch medical care and family support, Mark fought his way back to health. Our jubilation soon mixed with grief when Mark’s older brother passed away in September after a brief illness. Dave was a big supporter of our decision to become "vanlifers" and we miss him everyday.

We have been out West (California and Arizona) since Summer 2023. We miss our sons, Ryan and Evan, but we're glad that they came to visit us here twice. Mark has kept the whiskers he acquired while in the hospital as a kind of badge of honor of everything that has transpired over the last year and a half. He now looks like a cross between a gold prospector and a French chef.

We have transitioned into a retirement groove of mixing camping with stays at the homes of family and friends, together with short-term property rentals in intriguing locales. We continue to be huge fans of Harvest Hosts, a membership program that directs us to over 5,000 unique private properties (farms/ranches, museums, restaurants, entertainment venues, wineries/breweries, golf courses) where we can spend the night in our self-contained little RV with the understanding that we will support our hosts by making a purchase of their products or services.

The accounts of our travels to Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Arizona in 2022 are posted at the bottom of this home page, with the year added to the file titles to distinguish them from our current and future postings. Unlike our first year on the road, when we proceeded in a linear course through the Plains and the Mountain West, our new entries (with links directly below this text) are chronologically diverse and arranged more thematically, a reflection of how we have ricocheted about. The earliest photos in this section are from California, where we landed in fall 2022, which we hadn't yet posted due to Mark's medical situation.

We hope you’ll join us on VanBrights as we continue to explore this vast and spellbinding country of ours!

We couldn't wait! Retirement didn't come until May 2023, but we decided to take advantage of openings in both of our schedules to hit the road early. Though we had a few overnight stays in our new ProMaster conversion van in July, the official "stepping off" of our nomadic life was August 15th, 2022, when we headed west on I-80 in search of America's treasures. We named our van "Morgan" after the stalwart 19th-century breed of horses--first sired in Vermont--whose strength and steadfastness made them invaluable to American farming, industry, and even the military.

We began our 2022 adventures in Iowa and South Dakota (images directly below). Subsequent postings for Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona are found in the links at the bottom of this page. Entries for California (2022 to 2024) can be found via the links in the preceding section. Please note: Best viewed on I-pad or laptop.

Life on the Road...
Our First Posting: August 30, 2022

Hard to believe almost three months have passed since we sold our house of 31 years (the closing was June 13). While waiting for the call that our new tiny home-on-wheels was ready for pickup (we worked with Sportsmobile, a van conversion company in Indiana), we wandered around the Northeast, knapsacks on our backs (all right, suitcases in the trunk of a Toyota Corolla, but you get the drift). Thank goodness for the respite we enjoyed at a tranquil home in Vermont (Kathy and Rich, we owe you). We then bounced around from hotel to hotel, collecting complimentary shampoo and lotion samples, until we we finally picked up our new rig. We would spend the next several weeks learning how to live together in 70 square feet. The first half of August we left the road to visit with family. After a peaceful stay on Long Lake, Michigan (thank you Glen and Rhonda), followed by a raucous reunion on nearby Glen Lake (thanks again for your generosity, Laura and Bob), we launched our western tour on August 15 from New Lenox, Illinois (we appreciate the hospitality, Mike and Sara!). Interstate 80-West, wahoo! We will now rely heavily on Harvest Hosts, a program in which a variety of properties (e.g., farms, wineries/breweries, churches, golf courses) allow RVs and camper vans to stay overnight; we wheeled wayfarers, in turn, support the hosts with purchases or donations. For our three nights in Iowa, we stayed at an animal hobby farm (fresh eggs), a dairy farm (ice cream), and a sheep farm (sheep's milk cheese, very unusual!) We crossed the Missouri near Omaha, Nebraska before heading north into South Dakota. From bird-watching in Waubay Wildlife Refuge, to marveling at the corn cob murals of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, to witnessing a real life cattle round-up on a windswept ranch, we have enjoyed the rugged landscape and open, friendly people of South Dakota. While there, we camped in 3 cattle ranches, 1 horse farm, the historic homestead property of Laura Ingalls Wilder, 1 hobby farm, 2 KAOs, and the front yard of a guy named Jeremy (don't ask). We passed quickly through the northeast corner of Wyoming (with a stop at Devil's Tower) before crossing into Montana. Before we left Connecticut, we promised to keep in touch with a travelogue of our adventures.  It has taken us a while to adjust to our new lifestyle, especially the part about living together in 70 square feet. Good news: we have become practiced in the art of pantomime. Family and friends keep asking, "Where are you now?" We ask ourselves the same thing every morning when we wake up. Now that we are feeling the rhythm of the road (and have stopped stepping on each other's toes), we will be posting pictures and stories about our travels on a regular basis.
